Perhaps because I was very aware of myself as a child, the theme of childhood - as a way of thinking about the world -  became interesting to me as an artist.

Writer M. R. Higonnet describes childhood as an "edenic state from which adults fall, never to return." The image of a child often represents what we have lost, or perhaps what we fear losing. Inevitably, every picture of innocence hides away a dark side, a threat of change and loss.

It is not merely the innocence of childhood that appeals to me, but also the significance of this condition to our adult lives.
